Mood swings during PMS are undoubtedly the feature of this stage in any woman's cycle that those around them fear the most! Ecstatic one minute, ranting the next and in tears before coming back round to deliriously (and inexplicably) happy. PMS mood swings are often extreme, irrational and downright scary! Luckily, PMS mood swings normally only last over a few days and the woman in your life will return to her rational, stable self once again. At least for the next 28 days or so. PMS mood swings are caused by changes in levels of the hormones and neurotransmitters that are responsible for regulating mood. Normally, levels of these compounds in the body and brain are relatively stable, keeping mood and emotion on an even keel. During PMS, the body's production levels change and fluctuate. Not all women suffer from PMS mood swings in response these cyclical changes, but for those that do, the body's response can be pretty impressive (if not a little frightening!).
So how best to treat PMS mood swings? A diet rich in complex carbohydrates (fruits vegetables etc), evening primrose oil supplements, vitamin E, vitamin B6 and B12 can all help to balance mood and emotions. Getting lots of rest, fresh air and exercise can also help regulate mood. Certain antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications can help if mood swings become so severe as to impact on quality of life during PMS. Should things reach this stage, it's vital that you consult your doctor and seek extra help for PMS mood swings. For those around you, the best policy is to tell them not to take PMS mood swings. Ask them to be supportive, ride out the mood swings as you do and to provide you with as much chocolate as is necessary to get you through those few days of PMS.
